Think Alouds

This strategy will help students to:

  • Prepare students to surface their own thinking processes as they learn and understand a new concept, skill or strategy
  • Make thinking transparent

Implementation:

  1. Students are grouped by their instructional groups
  2. Students answer questions in their groups differentiated for their groups
  3. Students pause to explain their thinking including decisions they’re making about what to do next
  4. The teacher uses the Checklist for Assessing a Student Think-Aloud to identify their levels in comprehension, Content Knowledge and Evaluation (See example)

The teacher will take note of the qualities they do and do not exhibit
